Cuora flavomarginata
Chinese Box Turtle DISTRIBUTION: Taiwan, China, Ryukyu Islands Japan. EMPIRE STOCK: WC exported from China. SIZE: To almost 20 cm. HABITAT: More terrestrial than Cuora ambionensis, they are found around ponds and rice fields. DIET: Omnivorous. I feed fish, earthworms, rodent young, cantaloupe, banana, strawberries. SEXING: Males have thicker longer tails. BREEDING: Males are aggressive breeders. If the enclosure is too small other flavomarginata may eat a nesting females eggs as they are laid. I have heard this from multiple reliable sources. NOTES: Though not nearly as shy as Cuora galbinifrons, they tend to remain under cover. CARE SHEETS: CTTC |
When they aren't dug in during the winter or for periods of the summer, they lurk in the ferns like shelled raptors waiting for food to appear.
