North American Spotted Turtle

DISTRIBUTION: northeastern States from Florida to Maine and in the north west to Illinois. Some populations in Canada. Not very common in Florida, it has been occasionally found from the Central Florida area north.

EMPIRE STOCK: LTC and CBR.

SIZE: To just over 12 cm.

HABITAT: Found in marshes, bogs and streams.

DIET: Omnivorous. I feed Mazuri Freshwater Turtle, fish, earthworms, crickets, mealworms, snails, aquatic plants, and algae.

SEXING: Males have brown eyes and longer, thicker tails with the vent towards tip and a slight concavity to the plastron. Females have orange eyes and a flat plastron which comes closer to the carapacial rim and shorter tails.

BREEDING: 1-8 eggs are possible per clutch, and up to 3 clutches may be produced.

Temperature-dependent Sex Determination.

NOTES: Spotted Turtles are protected in every state they occur except Florida, where they are very uncommon. The amount of spotting is individually variable and there may be a tendency of some populations to be more spotted than others.
