Chinemys reevesii
Reeve's Turtle DISTRIBUTION: China, Korea Taiwan, and Japan. EMPIRE STOCK: WC exported from China. SIZE: Getting just over 20 cm these are relatively small turtles. Reeve's Turtles from Japan are reported to attain a larger size than the mainland Reeves. HABITAT: Found in a variety of shallow bodies of water including streams, ponds and swamps. DIET: I feed a variety of foods, including Mazuri Freshwater Turtle pellets, fish, fruits and vegetables. SEXING: Males have longer thicker tails with the vent beyond the carapacial rim. Males tend to darken as they age and lose their neck stripes. BREEDING: 1-3 clutches of up to 9 eggs each. Temperature-dependent Sex Determination. NOTES: These are hardy turtles with a lot of personality. A sentimental favorite of mine since they were my first exotic (defined at the time as anything other than a Red-eared Slider, or Painted Turtle). Reeve's are a good example of how a common turtle can quickly become less common. They are still imported, but not in the numbers of years ago and instead of $5 they can go for $60 and up for imports. |
