Rana spenocephala

Southern Leopard Frog

Florida distribution: entire state.

Identification: up to 12.7 cm. Yellow spot in center of tympanum is one means of telling this species apart from other Leopard Frogs.

These frogs are abundant around my turtle ponds, evidently staying out of reach of some of the more carnivorous turtles.

Pointed snout differentiates it from Gopher Frog. You can also see the yellow spot in the center of the tympanum.

This species is highly variable and this specimen was more brown than green.
