Iguana iguana

Green Iguana

Florida Distribution: INTRODUCED SPECIES. Scattered populations in South Florida and the Keys.

Identification:  up to 200 cm. The largest lizard in the U.S. Fleshy spines on back.

These are now a rather common site in South Florida and the Keys. This old male was grazing and watching over his harem when I pulled up. The car didn't spook him, but the sound of my camera turning on did and they all scattered.

I was a little surprised at how shy these lizards are, like this one hiding behind a horizontal hanging branch.

And this one that shot out into the water and then climbed a tree.
